Design
The Style is the first handset that combines both the full QWERTY keyboard and the clamshell design. This type of design is common when it comes to the simple messaging phones. This means that RIM is aiming to launch the Style mainly for the users who require entry level smartphones. The Sprint network claims that the flip design is popular among its customers. This mainly because it reduces the accidental presses and it is also easy to open and close the device.
The Style roughly has a square shape on the front side mainly due to the presence of the full QWERTY keyboard. Its measurements as mentioned above indicate that it is slightly thicker than the usual flip phones. Anyhow, the width is almost the same as the other phones and hence it is not of much concern. The corners are rounded and the sides are curved. The back side has a smooth finish that provides a luxurious feel.
On the front side there is a 2 inch LCD display. This is a color external display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. It is framed by a glossy exterior finish. But the screen has very poor sunlight legibility. It produces too much of glare that makes it difficult to view it under bright sunlight. This display shows the battery status, signal strength, time and date by default. It can also be set to display the preview of the incoming email and SMS and to display the caller ID. It also displays the name of the track that is currently playing when the music player is running on the background.
The left side of the handset has the micro USB charging port, micro SD card slot and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The micro SD card slot is housed under the battery cover. The right side houses the volume rocker and a convenience key that can be mapped to any of the phone's functionality. The back side of the handset houses the camera lens along with the LED flash light.
On flipping the handset open, the 2.7 inch display is visible. It has a resolution of 360 x 400 pixels and a color support of 65 K colors. The images appear bright and sharp on this display and there are no issues related to the text and Web page viewing. The display allows the users to adjust the display theme, screen dim timer, backlight timer, brightness and the size style of the font. The handset has a flat array of navigation with a raised optical trackpad at the middle. It includes the main menu key, back key, power or end key and the send key.
Interface and Software
The Style is the second handset that makes use of the Blackberry OS 6. Let us first look in to the highlights of using the OS 6 which is the major overhaul of the entire platform. The home screen is thoroughly revamped. There is a quick access area on the top and this area informs the user about the basic information like the data, time, connectivity options, etc. and then the notification bar that displays the missed calls and the new messages. Then comes a new navigation bar that displays different screens for the five different categories of contents and applications such as Frequent, Downloads, Media, Favorites and All respectively. The navigation between these different screens is done by using the touch screen. This is a faster process and the touch screen is quite intuitive. The track pad is also easy to use but it requires lit more precision. .The universal search is a preferred addition. The user has to just type in the keyword and the feature starts searching for the relevant keywords throughout the phone. The search can also be extended to Blackberry App World, YouTube, Google and also to the other third part applications.
Performance
The call quality is very good overall. The callers sounded clear and loud with no hiss or static. The voice of the callers sounded natural and clean. The callers on the opposite end reported the absence of the background noise. They could hear us sharp and clear. The speakerphone sounds harsh. The voice's pitch sounds lower on the speaker phone. The V-DO coverage of the Style is quite enjoyable. The style has a 624 MHz which has no issues regarding the performance during the launching and switching of applications. the battery life is rated to be 4.5 hours of talk time and about 10.5 days of stand by time.
