So much is written about weight loss, what foods to eat, what foods to avoid, what is good, what is bad, that if you are actually looking to lose weight, you could be forgiven for getting so confused with the varying opinions and information, that you give up on your weight loss idea before you even start.
I don't know why, but somewhere along the line it seems to have been decided that weight loss is complicated. The reality is somewhat different. Weight loss is simple, it's just not easy.To lose weight, you have to create a calorie deficit.
It really does not matter how you create that deficit, just so long as you do. Any diet book, or weight loss plan you care to look at will still come down to creating a way for you to eat less calories in order to lose weight. No matter what the diet guru's will tell you, it really doesn't matter if you eat low carb, high carb, or any other variation of macro nutrient manipulation, get your calories below your normal requirements and you WILL lose weight. There is no wrong way or right way to lose weight. The best way to lose weight, is the way that works for you. However you can create a calorie deficit that gets you shedding the pounds is good enough.
The other main problem we have is knowing how many calories we consume. In our normal daily lives calories can be estimated, but we can never know for sure. Food packaging is a guide, but it is not exact. One of the big problems with looking to lose weight is we tend to over estimate the number of calories we burn, and we underestimate the number we consume. The result is, that over time the weight creeps on.
The best thing to do in this case is change your view on calories. Remember that at any time all you can do is make a calculated estimate. But it can never be more than a guess, so work on your daily calorie needs been lower, and your calorie consumption as higher. In other words average down you daily number, and average up the food. If the package said 190 calories, base it on 230.
So if losing weight comes down to calories, you are probably asking how many calories do you need ?
The best guide for your daily calories is your resting metabolic rate, also known as your RMR. As the name describes, your resting metabolic rate is the calories you burn, just resting. It does not include walking or general moving about. Think of it as the calories you burn sitting on the couch watching TV.
Once you know your resting metabolic rate (RMR), you can use this as your base for calories. I would advise you look at calories weekly rather than daily. If you understand your basic calorie needs ( hint it's less than you think ) then you are already on your way to achieving weight loss success.
