Production

The shooting was originally likely to begin in Miami, USA, but because of budget concerns this was scrapped. Instead the shooting may primarily take place in Film City, Mumbai and London. In March 2010, Khan tweeted that the shooting of the movie had officially begun.

Casting

Kareena Kapoor performs the female lead along with Khan in the film (the duo were last paired opposite one another in Asoka (2001) whilst Arjun Rampal would be seen as the villain.

During an appearance on the chat show Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, Khan mentioned that Jackie Chan was "contacted for a role in the movie". Khan had reportedly sent Chan the detailed script of the movie, along with the action sequences and a quick synopsis of his character. He later on verified on Twitter that Chan may not be part of Ra.1.

Akon and Khan reportedly met in Los Angeles, USA. It was reported that Akon, besides singing just one song, might also form part of the cast. But nevertheless, Sinha afterwards outlined that Akon would "only be singing for our film and not acting". Akon arrived in India on March 8, 2010, and recorded the song with composers Vishal-Shekhar on March 9 and 10. His arrival was supposedly kept "very hush-hush
