Raavana directed by Maniratnam with star cast Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. After experimenting with different genres, Maniratnam this time has reportedly made a film which is a more of a modern day version of the great Indian epic Ramayana in which the wife of Lord Rama, Sita was abducted by the demon king of Lanka, Raavana. It is being said that this modern version will have a new twist of the great epic.

The film is a confrontation between Dev a policeman and Beera a tribal. Dev manages to rip open Beeras world which changes lives, changes fortunes. Beera though injured, but enraged hits back at Dev by abducting his wife t a jungle. The forest becomes the settling ground between good and evil. As said earlier, a lot of hopes are pinned on this film not only for its story, screenplay and the director, but also for its ensemble star cast. Apart from Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Vikram being the main protagonists, Govinda, Ravi Kishan, Nikhil Dwivedi, Priyamani, and Tejaswini Kolhapure play prominent roles in the film.

The film will be dubbed in Tamil and Telugu and the soundtracks are composed by the legendary A R Rahman himself. Jungle plays a main role in the film and the film has been shot in some exotic locations including the forests of Kerala, Ooty, Jhansi and Mahabaleshwar.

Movie Review:

First hand reports suggest Raavan, for all its technical finesse is not going to be worth a dekko. Reviews have started pouring in and no one seems to have a kind word for its makers.

Mani Ratnam, considered Indias best director might have laid another egg. At a time when Bollywood needs a hit, something of a miracle, the Raavan reviews are only going to make audiences stay away from this twisted version of Ramayana. Some have even been so scathing that they have been re-considering how to look at films as entertainment and rate Housefull one notch up. Now, thats a serious dent, and an insult to Mani sir.

But does Mani sir care? Dragging Lux lathered Ash under many waterfalls and thickets and dressing Abhishek in rags and colour smeared scowl, giving the North Indian cinema goers a Madras Cut film is no relief at this moment. Although it might seem a right time for the films release with it set in wet jungles akin to Mumbais monsoonal mood, why would people walk into a theatre to see more rain? Ramayana under an umbrella! Behne do, isse behne do.

Not even that, Ash as a damsel in distress does not bore well for an audience. Poor girl has been in distress ever since she joined films, with her shrill pitch and arched eyebrows meaning to appear as high-art. Abhishek Bachchan does look like he has a RGV Ki Aag hangover, in mannerism mocking the crassness of Amitabh Bachchan's Gabbar act in the film.

Yet another failure for the most celebrated couple of Bollywood. Abhi-Ash, after the dismal show of Kuch Ka Kaho, should have followed the advice. Kuch Na Karo.
