Raccoon Problems: Dealing With Nature's Bandits

The raccoon is an animal native to North America

. Raccoons generally live in the forests and in areas where they can scavenge for food. This has since become a problem in suburban and urban neighborhoods, where raccoons will go to pick through the garbage for food. Raccoons eat both plants and animals.

Raccoons generally live together in packs, which is another reason why they can be a problem for people. Female raccoons from the same family will live together, and after a mating season females will raise from two to five young. Males from different families live together as a means to protect themselves from other male raccoon "gangs."

Raccoons are known for their dexterity. Their paws allow them to do many different things, such as take the lid off of your garbage can. They are also very intelligent. Some wildlife buffs admire the fact that they have been able to adapt to being around humans, but others see this familiarity as a problem. When raccoons don't fear humans, they can become quite a nuisance to them.

Nighttime is when raccoons are active, so it is not as common to see them as it is their destruction in the morning. While they can cause some damage outside your home, they can also cause damage inside. They can build their nests in your attics or chimneys, and then you'll have a serious problem on your hands. You will have urine and feces from the pets in your home which can make you sick and can also do structural damage.

More importantly, raccoons can carry communicable diseases that can harm humans if they are infected. Raccoons can get roundworms, and if a human were to accidentally ingest a roundworm it could get into their body and damage different organs. They can carry different kinds of bacteria that are harmful for humans. Most commonly noted, raccoons can carry rabies. While it is rare for raccoons to carry this disease and then attack a human, raccoons with rabies should be taken seriously.

Most people think that when they see a raccoon out during the day that it must have rabies, because raccoons are nocturnal creatures. While the continued presence of raccoons in your neighborhood should be resolved, not every raccoon out during the day has rabies. Rabies tends to make a raccoon very sick, and most don't get the chance to roam around before they die.

If you think you have a raccoon problem, the best thing to do is call a professional exterminator. If you have raccoons living in your home, there isn't much you can do alone to get rid of them without damaging your home. Exterminators are also trained in how to fix any damage caused by pests in your home. This means that they will remove a raccoon's nest and any feces or stains caused by the raccoons. Most states have laws against killing raccoons, and even if you were to catch the raccoons, you can't release them somewhere else without a license to do so.
