Racing Pigeon Books - What Should You Do when A racing Pigeon Doesn't Come Home?

What do you do when one of your racing pigeons does not make it home following a race

? Here are four basic questions you really should answer:

1) How long was the bird missing before someone found it? This will give you some warning of the condition of your bird. If it was lost for a long time, chances are it has been injured2) How far from its loft was the bird when found? If it isn't very far, you really should go and retrieve the bird. That will allow the person who found your bird know that pigeon fanciers care about their pigeons. Expect the bird to be in bad condition, however. If it got close to home but not all of the way, there's likely a problem.

3) Did the finder just pick the bird up, or did he need to catch it? It's not easy to catch a pigeon in good health. If the person just picked the bird up it probably has sustained an injury.

4) Is the finder knowledgeable about pigeons? If the finder does not know a lot about pigeons and just picked it up, he likely thinks it's a pet bird. Many folks will not know a pigeon in good condition would have taken off and not allowed itself to be caught.

Some other considerations are the length of the race, how far had the pigeon flown to that point and how far from its loft is it. Do not ever direct a finder to let the bird go. It makes you look like you do not care about your racer. Either go and pick up the bird or inform the locator he may keep it. If he can't take care of it, find yet another pigeon fancier close by and let them pick it up. They might give it a new home or make a plan to get it back to you.

Remember, the bottom line is it really is your bird. You entered it in a race and it really is your responsibility to take care of it.
