Racing Pigeon Lofts - 5 Must Have For A Winning Pigeon Loft
The days of keeping racing pigeons in your attic are long gone
. First, good luck finding a city ordinance that will let you do it. More importantly, to raise, train and breed champion racing pigeons, you will need a proper racing pigeon loft. A winning pigeon loft need not be expensive, as long as you keep these five key elements in mind.
Build or Rennovate
Many people want to use existing structures on their property and convert them into racing pigeon lofts. Whether or not you do this depends obviously on your budget. Some older structures can be eaily remodeled, but their location might not be ideal. It is critical that youpay close attention to location.
Location
If the existing barn or shed is not in an open space, then you would be better off building from scratch. Birds can easily get into the habit of landing and sitting on trees or wires that are near their loft and then it can be a very hard habit to break. Also, please be considerate of your neighbors and don not build close to your property line. Not everyone loves pigeons and you don not have to want to deal with complaints or alienate your nrighbors.
Size
Another important consideration when building a racing pigeon loft is size. Overcrowding will lead to undernourished, unfit birds and can lead to the spread of disease. The industry standard recommendation is 2 cubic feet per pigeon.
Design
Many homing and racing pigeon loft plans are available for download off the internet. Beware that some of these are no more than generic shed or barn plans. Some important design considerations are compartments and roofing. First, you should divide the racing pigeon loft into at least 3 compartments - one for cocks, one for hens and ones for young birds. Ideally you should also have a fourth compartment where you can isolate sick birds.
With regards to the roof, obviously the goal is for your racing pigeons to return as soon as possible to their pigeon loft and not loiter on the roof. With this is mind, a flat roof is not a good idea. Many fanciers also place pigeon deterrents such as bird spikes on their roofs.
Ventilation
One of the most important, yet often overlooked, element in a great racing pigeon loft is ventilation. Without proper airing and ventilation the pigeon droppings will not dry and this makes for a disease prone environment. Adequste ventilation and insultaion are important. Very few states have temperatures that are cool enough in summer and warm enough in winter to keep pigeons comfortable without insultaion.
