Radiant, Comfortable Heat With Heated Glass
They're not nearly as well-known as space heaters and wood-burning fireplaces
, but heated glass products like heated windows and heated floor mats have been around since the 1930s.
Windows aren't exactly known for their R-value. In fact, you probably associate the image of a beautiful wall of windows in a ski lodge with a great deal of eyebrow-raisingly high heating bills. Heat literally goes right out the window in just about every situation because glass has the same R-value as newspaper. Have you ever drawn little smiley faces in the frost on the inside of your bedroom window? Then you know what I'm talking about.
Many people are not aware, but using your windows, skylights, and glass sheets for floor mats or towel warmers is perfectly possible, and it will cost you far less energy than running a space heater. By turning glass into a radiant heating system, you can have that wall of windows without feeling the chill.
By using a specific type of glass product that conducts electricity, heated glass companies create sources of heat that are safe, energy efficient, and more effective than space heaters. With a layer of low-E coating painted on the back of the glass in order to reflect heat wherever you want it, windows, skylights, and floor mats all become sources of heat rather than energy suckers. Plus, because radiant heat is better at keeping you comfortable, you won't have to put up with the dangers that space heaters create.
The applications for these types of heated glass products go beyond preventing your picture windows from costing you more in heating bills than your mortgage. A heated floor mat, for instance, can be placed anywhere you are likely to spend time - under your desk chair, beside your bed, under your feet at your workbench or hobby table, or in front of the couch. Pets love heated floor mats because they can sleep on the floor - even a concrete basement or garage floor - and still stay happily warm. Because the temperature of residential heated glass is only a few degrees warmer than the human body, you won't need to worry about burning yourself. In contrast, space heaters are extremely dangerous for small, curious children and pets because of the high temperatures of interior elements.
Heated glass products like heated windows and skylights would certainly be a fine addition to your living space. A heated floor mat provides further comfort where you tend to spend a lot of time, and all of that heat will cost you only pennies in energy expenditure.
