Radiator Repair: Is Your Car Blowing Off Steam?
Car engines emit a lot of energy in the form of heat
. Left unchecked, that heat can build up and cause pressure that needs to be released. Damage can occur not only to the engine, but also to the surrounding parts, requiring an immediate radiator service, and possibly a more costly radiator repair.
You may be wondering how does the cooling system work? Its main job is to keep the vehicles temperature at a normal level. Once the engine heats up the antifreeze liquid, it circulates and transfers the heat to the cooling fins and then radiated into the air. This works to cool the water and antifreeze mixture. This process is repeated again in the cooling process.
With this process continuing repeatedly over the life of your car, just how long can you expect your radiator to last? Most radiators properly maintained should last for at least eight to 10 years. Older metal radiators, can possibly last even longer.
If you want your vehicles radiator to last this long, it's important to have the coolant system flushed out as often as your car's manufacturer recommends. This type of radiator service helps the antifreeze and water coolant to continue to flow freely within the cooling system. The proper level of coolant is also very important. If the level is too low, it could be an indication that your cooling system has a leak. Have your radiator repair specialist inspect conduct an inspection of the cooling system as soon as possible.
However, if the coolant level is at the proper level and over-heating still occurs, other potential causes include rusty hose clamps, corrosion to the aluminum core and the thermostat that regulates coolant flow. Again, if any of these problems are obvious, have a radiator service sooner rather than later.
If you maintain your vehicles cooling system, it will not be necessary for your car to blow off steam and possibly damage the engine or other components. If you take good care of your radiator it should be with you for quite a long time -- maybe even the entire life of your car.
