Radiologic Technologist: Arrt Certification Examinations And What To Do If You Fail

Radiologic technologists, better known as radiographers

, are the medical personnel who perform diagnostic imaging examinations, including X-rays. Radiographers who perform imaging examinations are responsible for accurately positioning patients and ensuring that a quality diagnostic image is produced. They work closely with radiologists, the physicians who interpret medical images to either diagnose or rule out disease or injury. For the images to be interpreted correctly by the radiologist, the imaging examinations must be performed properly and competently by the imaging experts, the radiographer.

Graduates of radiologic technologist programs may specialize in specific imaging techniques such as bone densitometry, cardiovascular-interventional radiography, computed tomography, mammography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, quality management, sonography or general diagnostic radiography.

The ARRT adopts and upholds standards for educational preparation for entry into the profession of radiologic technologist and creates and administers exams which assess the skills and knowledge underlying the intelligent performance of tasks typically required by a professional practice. This articles aim was to provide information for individuals who have failed an American Registry of Radiologic Technologists examination.

The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists is an organization that is responsible for upholding standards for educational preparation for entry into the field of health care as a radiologic technologist. One way they do this is by creating and administering certification exams which assess the skills and knowledge required by radiologic technologists who are employed by professional practices.

In order to eligible for ARRT certification, radiologic technologists must graduate from an ARRT-accredited program and pass the examination. Once radiologic technologists take and pass the examination, they are certified and recognized as highly qualified individuals in medical imaging, radiation therapy and interventional procedures.

Radiologic technologists must complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years in order to maintain an ARRT certification.

Individuals who fail an ARRT examination may be allowed to take subsequent examinations, but must pay additional fees and will have to wait until the next time the ARRT is administering the test. Individuals are limited to three attempts to pass the radiologist assistant examination or a primary certification examination, such as those given for nuclear medical technology, radiography, sonography, magnetic resonance imaging and radiation therapy.

If the exam is not passed on the first attempt, the second and third attempts must be completed within a three-year period from the date on which the first exam was taken. IF the test is failed three times, the radiologic technologist seeking certification may retake the exam within one year of the third attempt, as long as they submit documentation of successful completion of remedial activities acceptable to the ARRT.

Individuals must complete their three attempts within the three-year period that commences once the individual has met all other qualifications based upon the application submitted by the individual. An individual who fails the examination three times may retake the exam within a year of the third attempt if the individual submits documentation of successful completion of remedial activities acceptable to the ARRT following the last attempt in the examination.

Those who fail their fourth attempt or do not complete the examination within one year will no longer be eligible to take examinations and can only regain eligibility by returning to school or satisfying other education requirements set forth by the ARRT. There are a select number of educational institutions that have implemented a program of study designed specifically for those who have failed the ARRT.

As most states and employers require or prefer radiologic technologists to be ARRT-certified, ensuring that the proper steps are taken to obtain the right education and experience and be prepared for the examination are paramount.
