What is a radiologic technologist?

Radiologic technologists, better known as radiographers, are the medical personnel who perform diagnostic imaging examinations, including X-rays. Radiographers who perform imaging examinations are responsible for accurately positioning patients and ensuring that a quality diagnostic image is produced. They work closely with radiologists, the physicians who interpret medical images to either diagnose or rule out disease or injury. For the images to be interpreted correctly by the radiologist, the imaging examinations must be performed properly and competently by the imaging experts, the radiographer.

What type of job can I get as a radiologic technologist?

Hospitals are the primary employer of radiologic technologists, but a greater number of new jobs can be found in physicians' offices and diagnostic imaging centers.

Those who have completed radiologic technologist training can specialize in specific imaging techniques such as bone densitometry, cardiovascular-interventional radiography, computed tomography, mammography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, quality management, sonography or general diagnostic radiography.

How do I prepare for a job as a radiologic technologist?

If you are interested in a career as a radiologic technologist, you need to have proper training. Schools that specialize in radiologic technologist training offer education that will help obtain an entry-level position. In order to eligible for ARRT certification, radiologic technologists must graduate from an ARRT-accredited program and pass the examination. Once radiologic technologists take and pass the examination, they are certified and recognized as highly qualified individuals in medical imaging, radiation therapy and interventional procedures.

Radiologic technologists must complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years in order to maintain an ARRT certification.

The ARRT adopts and upholds standards for educational preparation for entry into the profession of radiologic technologist and creates and administers exams which assess the skills and knowledge underlying the intelligent performance of tasks typically required by a professional practice.
