Rails for Clothes | Which Type is Best?
You know what happens. The years pass, and you just seem to collect things. The house begins to fill up. For many women the best example of this is their clothes. It takes a certain type of woman to throw clothes away.
I'm afraid to say my partner is guilty of this. Her clothes are her prized possessions. She can rarely bring herself to ditch any clothes. Her favourite saying when I ask why she doesn't throw out that coat or dress she's had forever is that she needs to keep it, "Just in case"
A consequence of this is that our house is inhabited by lots of clothes. We have long ago exhausted our fitted wardrobe space and resorted to a kind of heap system on beds in our spare rooms. Recently she had a great idea and asked if we could get some rails for clothes. This sounded good to me, so I set about researching clothes rails.
There are two basic types - these are wall mounted rails and freestanding rails. Each has advantages and disadvantages.
What I discovered was that wall mounted rails were generally strong and sturdy. Provided you installed them properly with adequate fixing mechanisms, a wall mounted clothes rail can accommodate clothes of any weight. They are supplied in different lengths, typically 4 foot, 6 foot and 8 foot. They also come with fixing brackets, plus you can get extra fixing brackets where it is recommended for the larger sized rails.
The main downside of a wall mounted garment rail is that once it is installed, that's it. You can't easily move it somewhere else, thus there is no portability with wall mounted rails. Plus they are fixed at the height at which they are installed.
Turning to freestanding clothes rails, I think the biggest benefit is that they are essentially portable. Even freestanding rails that don't come with castors can still be moved to another location. For example, if you decide to change the furniture around in the bedroom, you can place the rail in any new space that the re-arrangement allows. Plus you can move the rail to another bedroom if you wish. The other flexibility you have with freestanding clothes rails is that the top rail can be adjusted to any required height.
The main downside of freestanding rails is that they can topple over if they are overloaded to the point of instability.
We decided on two of each, and we installed a two 4 foot wall mounted rails and a 5 foot and a 6 foot freestanding rail all in chrome. We like the stylish appearance!
