Rainwater Harvesting As A Way Of Providing A Safe And Sustainable Water Supply

As water becomes scarce for many places in the UK due to rise in demand

, we are always looking at new and different ways to supplement the water supply. One of the best ways to do this is by the use of advanced rainwater harvesting techniques. Despite the fact that rainwater harvesting is an obvious solution, there are many households and businesses that have not even heard of it. This is a situation that companies like SCP Environmental Ltd are trying to put right. Matthew Rolph who runs SCP, believes that rainwater harvesting is the future of supplementing water supplies for the country.

Current statistics show that the average UK household uses a great deal of water. Of course it depends greatly on the individual household, but an average household with three people uses about 140 cubic metres of water. Larger households who use a lot of water can use up to 280 cubic metres. Try to imagine a container that is 280 metres long and wide, and also 280 metres tall. Then fill this imaginary container with water. This is a staggering amount for just one house, especially considering that much of this is wasted. A quarter of all this water is usually just flushed down the toilet, which is a waste of water you've paid for. It's also known that leaky taps, leaving taps running when cleaning teeth, and not reusing household water for other things, such as on the garden, wastes a significant amount of water.

Washing cars, flushing toilets and running taps accounts for up to 50% of total household water usage. All of this wastage can be saved by employing a system for recycling rainwater, and using rainwater harvesting to generate water for these tasks can reduce the strain on cleaning and sanitising mains water significantly. Even if only a fraction of households and businesses turn to rainwater harvesting to supplement their water supplies, it could make a huge difference.

Water consumption in the UK can be cut significantly if people switch to rainwater harvesting techniques, and there is plenty of incentive to do it, if only people were aware of the systems. The cost of installing a rainwater harvesting system complete with an underground storage tank can be reclaimed in a very short period of time, and huge savings can be made. It is likely to be a lot simpler than you may imagine benefiting from these systems so please make the time to find out for yourself.
