The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) headed by Raj Thackeray intended taking a rally

led by thousands of MNS supporters who were expected to gather at Azad Maidan. The rallys main aim was to protest against the killing of the two demonstrators and 52 others including policemen and injured media persons when a protest against alleged persecution of Muslims in Assam had turned violent. Thackeray amidst the ongoing protest demanded dismissal of state's Home Minister R R Patil and Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik as he believes that they had remained incompetent to control the whole situation. Raj is said to have broaden his base by taking up such an issue and capturing the Hindutva plank of Bal Thackerays party too, though he has been persistently denying to advance the cause of Hindutva and its propagation for political gains.
