Ranthambore village derives its name from the two hills Ran and Thambore. Located on the border of Thar Desert, the Ranthambore tiger reserve covers an area of 390 sq km and has the largest population of tigers. The Rathambore National park, declared the Project Tiger Reserve in 1973, is one of the largest reserves in the country. The Ranthambore reserve houses various rare animals and birds. The animals include leopard, nilgai, chital, wild boar, hyena and sambhar. The beautiful deciduous forest amidst the Vindhya and Aravalli Hills adds the beauty of the region to its extreme. Jungle jeep safari can be arranged to the innermost part of the forest by which one can explore the wildlife closely. The reserve is also a paradise of bird watchers as we can see 270 different species of birds like kingfishers, woodpeckers, cockoos, pigeon, doves, owls and hornbills.
Besides Ranthambore National Park, the city of Ranthambore offers many more places to visit. Ranthambore Fort, Jogi Mahal, Bakaula, Kachida Valley, Raj Bagh ruins and Sarwal Lake are some other places to roam around. Ranthambore Fort is a majestic fort situated atop a hill from where we can have a glimpse of the entire national park.
This Fort is an oldest fort of the country as was built in 944 AD. The fort is a must visit place for tourists as it houses various archeologically significant items. Jogi Mahal is a guest house for tourists from where visitors can have a stunning view around. This was the hunting lodge for the maharajas of Jaipur.
Jaipur Airport is the nearest airport to Ranthambore and conveyances are available from Jaipur to the national park. This airport connects different cities in the country and for foreign travellers, Delhi is the nearest international airport. Sawai Madhopur is the nearest railway station from Ranthambore. Cabs charge Rs. 200/- for this 10 km distance. Several buses connect Ranthambore with the nearest cities. Private owned buses have their shuttle services to Delhi which is 400 km away and to Agra, 250 km away.
