Rapid Prototyping And Its Benefits
The process of prototyping is a relative new invention
. The very first machine used for prototyping is introduced in the market during the late 1980s. The term rapid prototyping is derived from the use and the method for which the machines were first utilized.
Rapid prototyping is a process wherein physical objects are constructed automatically by means of an additive manufacturing technology. During the first years when the process was introduced, it is used for the production of prototype parts and models, as the current name suggests. Today, due to the advancement in technology, it can also be used in manufacturing production-quality parts. It is even quite popular in sculpting for fine arts exhibitions.
The process starts from the design created in the computer using a program known as CAD or computer aided design. AMS or animation modeling software can also be used. The design is translated into a physical model starting from its cross sections. Successive layers are then added until the model is completed. The physical model is identical as the virtual one for the WYSIWYG process is applied.
Take note that the word rapid included in the name of the process is relative in nature. The speed of
rapid prototype manufacturing will depend on how big and how complex the model is. Completion can take from several hours up to several weeks. There are various machines used in the process and the type of machine will also affect the speed of the process.
The techniques used by
rapid prototyping manufacturers also vary depending on the materials being used and the parts being reproduced. For solid freeform fabrication for example, two materials are utilized. These are the main building material of the part and the support material. The support material is vital in order to provide added support for the projecting features of the model.
Technologies used in
Rapid prototyping manufacturing vary as well. One can choose from Selective Laser Sintering, Fused Deposition Modeling, Stereo Lithography, Laminated Object Manufacturing and 3D Printing. As the process becomes more and more advanced, rapid prototyping is slowly moving to the direction of rapid manufacturing.
