Rare Blue Coral Find Inspires Conservation Effort In Fiji
Practically any coral, regardless of what part of the world it comes from
, and whether it is a rare variety or not, is very much the same when it comes to the way they are constructed that is they all consist of a white bony skeleton covered by one of many different varieties of colored and patterned tissue.
One of the exceptions when it comes to a recently discovered find on the reefs off Tiliva Island in Fiji. It is the blue coral (scientific name: Heliopora coerulea). The blue skeleton that it has inside is made of aragonite and iron salts, which give it its blue pigmentation.
Sighting of the blue coral is so rare that many divers, even those with extensive experience, have never seen it. The divers who saw it this time just happened to be members of a group of conservationists who were interested in encouraging the Fijiian communities to use natural resources in a way that sustains their supplies for future generations.
There couldnt have been a better way to inform communities of the importance of protecting a fragile environment than to show them underwater photos of a rare blue coral from within their fishing grounds. The photos added fuel to plans by the communities to establish marine protected areas near the islands. Of course, now, the area of the MPA will include the reef where the blue corals are located.
Coral reefs are one of the earths most important ecosystems, due in part to the support they give to thousands of other species and also to their usefulness in the development of life-saving drugs. Of course the infinite array of shapes and colors of the plants, animals and rare coral that make up a coral reef create a natural wonder that would be greatly missed if they were to vanish.
Aquarists around the world have begun sharing in the responsibility of protecting these fragile coral reefs. By propagating coral fragments in home aquariums, they help to preserve the species and limit what is harvested from earths natural coral reefs. Many types of rare corals can be propagated and grown from purchased specimens, and while the procedures involved sometimes require patience and persistence, the rewards are huge. Propagated
rare coral frags are readily available at any quality fish store.
