What is raspberry leaf tea?
Raspberry leaf tea is a tisane or infusion made by soaking raspberry leaves in hot water. There are several species of raspberries, but red raspberries are preferred for teas. The red raspberries, which are native in Europe and Northern Asia, contain more vitamins and minerals compared to other raspberry species.
Preparing raspberry leaf tea
Dried young shoots or leaves are used for raspberry leaf tea. Then, it is soaked or steep in freshly boiled water for 5 to 10 minutes. It has an astringent, black tea flavor with surprisingly no hint of raspberry taste. One to two teaspoons are needed to make a cup of raspberry leaf tea.
Benefits of raspberry leaf tea
Historically, raspberry leaf tea is used to aid delivery among pregnant mothers who are about to give birth. (see
Organic Almost Mommy Tea).Today, raspberry leaf tea is used to promote health. It has the flavor of black tea, without containing caffeine.
Raspberry tea is rich in vitamins and minerals, and is also especially rich in antioxidants. Studies show that raspberry has huge oxygen radical absorbance capacity (value that measures how much damaging oxygen radicals it can remove from cells). People who are stressed and convalescing from sickness are recommended to drink raspberry tea to aid recovery.
Red raspberry leaves are especially rich in folate which is essential for proper mental function, prevention of anemia and reproduction.
Raspberry fruits and leaves are also found to contain various phenolic compounds, anthocyanins and flavonoids that can protect the body from cancer and oxidative stress.
Raspberry leaf tea is a good astringent and mouth cleanser. It is a good remedy for sore throats, gingivitis and cankers in the mouth.
Although historically recommended to pregnant mothers, modern studies failed to support its proposed benefits. Studies supporting the efficacy of raspberry leaf tea to improve uterine tone and reduce necessity for cesarean section births have poor methodology with unconvincing results. It might also pose harm to pregnancy if taken during the first trimester. But still, people with caffeine sensitivity will find raspberry leaf tea a great alternative to black tea.
