The distance from Mumbai to Kolkata is around 1960 km. Kolkata, situated on the east bank of River Hooghly, was the capital of India during the British rule. Administrator of the English East India Company, Job Charnock, was the official founder of the city.

Victoria Memorial, designed by Sir William Emerson, is the most famous landmark of the city. Kolkata is also home to monuments, science museums and temples. Rabindra Sadan and Nandan are the theatre and music complexes. Among the other popular tourist attractions in Kolkata include Kalighat Temple, St. Pauls Cathedral, Nakhoda Mosque, Aquatica, Nicco Park, Kolkata Museum, Childrens Museum, Botanical garden and zoo.


Kolkata is well connected with Mumbai by air, rail and road. Major airlines like Air India, Indigo, JetLite, SpiceJet, Kingfisher, Air Deccan, Air India Express and JetAir have regular direct or stopover flights from Mumbai to Kolkata. The flights take about two hours and 30 minutes to reach the destination.

Kolkata is well connected with Mumbai by rail. Among the daily direct trains from Mumbai to Kolkata are Mumbai CST-Howrah Gitanjali Express (No.12859), Mumbai-Howrah Mail (No.12809) and Mumbai-Howrah Mail (No.12322).


There are some trains which run on certain days of the week. They are (with the days of the operation of trains in brackets) Mumbai-Howrah Express No.12869 (Sundays), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Guwahati Karmabhoomi Express No.19611 (Wednesdays), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Howrah Jnaneswari Express No.12101 (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Howrah Samarsata Express No.12151 (Wednesdays, Thursdays).

There is a Duronto Express which runs on Tuesdays. This train takes only 24 hours to travel from Mumbai to Kolkata. The fare for A/c three-tier in this train is Rs.1755. Other trains take more than 30 hours to reach the destination from Mumbai.

The journey by road is convenient. But very few passengers dare to travel such a long distance by road. It will take at least 35 hours to cover the distance by road and the journey will be tiresome for the travellers. There are no regular bus or taxi services from Mumbai to Kolkata. Only parties (marriage) or people shifting from Mumbai to Kolkata travel by road.
