Reason For Catching Flu: Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D gets produced in the body when the skin is directly exposed to sunlight

. Higher levels of vitamin D are linked with a better immune system. It is more difficult for individuals with vitamin D deficiency to fight off viral infections, such as influenza. It becomes even more difficult in the colder months when there is less sunlight. There should also be certain other measures need to be taken to prevent against the flu. These include proper and balanced diet plan, regular and adequate exercise and application of flu vaccine.

Research has proven that deficiency of Vitamin D can cause viral infections in the respiratory system. By increasing levels of Vitamin D in the body, such risks can be reduced considerably. It is not easy to get adequate amount of Vitamin D from the regular diet. It is, therefore, recommended, that there should be more sunlight exposure to the skin. However, sunlight may not always be available which is why Vitamin D supplements are necessary to boost ones immune system. It is advisable that these supplements be taken before the start of the winter season as it may take several months for the body to raise optimum levels of Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is also commonly known as the "sunshine vitamin" and shows better results for people with asthma and other lung diseases. A healthy adult normally gets colds twice a year plus a possible extra one where there is deficiency of Vitamin D. If you are exposed to the influenza virus and have sufficient levels of Vitamin D, the cells will be better equipped to fight off that organism so you are prevented from the infection.

Flu prevention is not limited to raising the levels of vitamin D as there are other ways to avoid it. A proper and balanced diet plan is essential to give a boost to the immune system. Another way to maintain a healthy lifestyle is through regular and adequate exercise. Individuals who perform regular workouts are less likely to get infections, such as flu. Last, but not the least, an effective measure for preventing influenza, especially in the colder months, is to use the flu vaccine.

Vitamin D deficiency is the leading cause of catching flu. Influenza vaccination can prove to be quite effective in prevention against flu. Schools and offices often conduct vaccination clinics and drives as they are often the most common areas for catching flu.
