Reasons For Female Acne
Although it is believed that acne is only experienced by teenagers, this is not true. Female acne can begin during puberty and linger well into adulthood. More than half of all adult women will experience at least the occasional breakout.
Acne is primarily a hormonal disease as hormones are responsible for stimulating the oil glands contained within our skin. According to recent studies, around sixty three percent of women who are prone to acne experience premenstrual hormonal flares. This causes an increase in the formation of acne between seven to ten days before menstruation which normally ceases with the onset of menstruation. This hormonally induced acne may be hard to treat, but oral contraceptives containing low doses of estrogen and progestins may help control the acne by regulating hormone levels as can androgen (which is a male sex hormone) receptor blockers.

Share: It can be very embarrassing as a woman of any age to have a highly visible skin condition such as acne which can leave you feeling very exposed and the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons. When suffering from an outbreak of acne, many women will try and conceal it using cosmetics. This can be a big mistake
Female acne may also be caused by certain cosmetics. These cosmetics block the pores of your skin, causing the bacteria Propionibacterium acne to become trapped inside. While this bacterium is on the surface of your skin, it is harmless, but once it is trapped in the pore and combined with the sebum contained in the pore, it begins to change and produce chemicals that can cause inflammation.
Cosmetic induced acne can seem to appear to come out of nowhere as it can take months to form and this can lead to confusion as to the cause of the acne outbreak. When purchasing cosmetic products for use on your skin or hair, look for products which state that they are non-acnegenic, non-comedogenic or hypo-allergic as these products are generally oily or greasy and don't encourage the formation of acne.
Female acne may be an indication of an underlying medical condition. If you experience excessive facial hair, thinning hair or bald patches on the scalp or irregular periods whenever you suffer an outbreak of acne, it is possible that you may have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or Adrenal Hyperplasia. You might also have a tumour that secretes homones, located in your pituitary or adrenal glands, or in your ovaries. If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to go and see your doctor. Your acne will not clear until the medical condition is dealt with.
