Reasons People Grieve

Grieving is a person's innate response to loss

. Grief is the pain you feel when you lose something that or someone who is an important part of your life.

Several instances of mourning for the loss of a person or something are the following:

- your girlfriend or boyfriend breaks up with you - you were sacked from your employment - you wasted the opportunity to follow your dream - a family member tells you he or she is suffering from a deadly illness - you discover that you are dying from a fatal illness - disintegration of a marriage - loss of a cherished best friend - a pet passes away - a loved one dies

The scenarios enumerated earlier can all cause a person to go through a period of grieving. Of all the instances cited above, we feel the most intense anguish if a loved one - be this a son or daughter, a mother or father, or a spouse - passes away. Nothing will be able to close the void that suddenly opens up in our life when they are gone.

We may have shared a huge part of our lives with our loved ones who passed away. And life would never be the same again when they are gone. We feel the sorrow for what has been taken from us. Still, it is in grieving that we develop the way to our own healing of the pain that we felt with our beloved's demise.

All of us have the right to express our pain. When we grieve, we have to select the healthy ways of expressing the pain that we experience.

It is common misconception that grief have to be accompanied by weeping each time we remember our departed loved ones. However, tears do not always signify sorrow. A person may seem silent, as if unfazed; yet deep down, they also suffer from the loss.

In addition, grieving, in contradiction to what is usually said, does not encompass a set time period. Grieving's duration varies from individual to individual. No one can hasten and instantly "get over" the grieving process. Time is a remarkable healer.
