Reasons To Get A Standby Generator

For the person who is building a new home or one who is remodeling a used home

, there might be a couple of items to add to it for safety's sake that weren't immediately thought of. Sure, one might think of adding in lower electrical usage light bulbs, high efficiency appliances and even more GFCI outlets. But did you ever stop to think about putting in a standby generator? There are several reasons why a generator installed on your house, no matter what age it is, would be a good idea for the future.

Generators Save Money

It might seem like the reverse is true, but a generator can actually save you a bit of money. In a few different ways. Even though there is the initial expense of the generator, that will pay for itself over the years as the power shuts on and off and you save in other ways. The first way is to think of the contents of your refrigerator and freezer. How long are you willing to let the items sit in your fridge without any cooling air blowing around them? How many days can you let the freezer go before it spoils? Having a standby generator to kick on when the power goes out will prevent any spoilage of the food. Therefore, since you don't have to empty the contents of the freezer or the fridge, you save money. Restocking one or both can be very expensive and costly, especially if there was a large supply of meat on the inside.

Another way generators save money is that if your own few lights, furnace or air conditioner will turn on during a power outage, then you can stay in your home. Even with minimal functions on, the house can be comfortable and lived in until the power comes back. Then there will be no expense for a hotel stay where the air is the right temperature and there are lights to see by.

Standby Generators Provide Comfort

Since the generator can run several functions through the house, then you can be comfortable. Did the power go out because of a heat wave that has sent rolling brownouts across the city? Your house won't be affected much because the generator will still run and power the AC unit that will keep the house at a more comfortable level than if the power were to go completely off and leave you in the sweltering heat. The same is also true for the reverse conditions. An ice storm might have knocked down power lines and caused everything to be shut down, but your standby generator kicked on and is keeping the furnace running so you and the family remain warm.

Having a generator kick on during any electrical malfunction can also be a safety factor. Is there someone in your house who requires a medical device that is run on electricity? No matter what type of device it is, with a generator on standby, then you know it will always work and be able to help your loved one, no matter if the real power is off for one hour or one whole day.
