Reasons To Move To Seaford, East Sussex
Seaford is a coastal town in the county of East Sussex. Located west of Eastbourne and east of Newhaven and Brighton, it is the largest town within the Lewes district, with a population of about 23,000. Being a small seaside resort Seaford attracts plenty of visitors, many of whom enjoy the nearby countryside and views.Seaford's history can be traced back several centuries and its economy has certainly had its share of ups and downs! Originally one of the main ports that served Southern England, the harbour began being silted up by sedimentation and the town's fortunes began to decline. This was not helped by the fact that they suffered from frequent attacks by French pirates. The town was also burnt down through the 15th and 16th centuries by the French and was rebuilt several times. During this time it is said the locals would occasionally cause ships to run aground by placing fake harbour lights upon the cliffs. Residents were then nicknamed 'cormorants' or 'shags' based on the enthusiasm for looting the ships wrecked in the bay.Somehow Seaford survived and luckily the town's fortunes had a revival in the 19th century with the arrival of the railway. With connections to Lewes and London Seaford became a small seaside resort.Three Prime Ministers have been MPs for the town and 7 Victoria Cross holders have some association with Seaford including Col "H" Jones the last person to receive a VC. Amongst the famous who went to school here were Donald Campbell (Speed King) Anthony Blunt (the spy), the McWhirter Twins (Guinness Book of Records), Angus Wilson (Writer) Richard Branson, Penelope Keith, Michael Olowokandi (Top US Basketball player) Margaret Rutherford (actress) and The Crown Prince of Thailand. General Gordon and Churchill visited Seaford for their holidays and Alfred Lord Tennyson lived here for a while. Jimi Hendrix's girlfriend did live here but died a couple of years ago.In 1987 Seaford gained from a massive beach replenishment operation, around 1 million tonnes of material got dredged from sandbanks and deposited on shore. During the early 1980's the beach had all but vanished and all that was left were small boulders and the shoreline was narrow and steep, discouraging the general seaside visitor - Seaford definitely benefitted from this much needed overhaul!Seaford also benefits from having its own shopping centre offering a wide range of independent and unique shops and boutiques. Many restaurants including Indian, Chinese and a fantastic fish and chip shop called Trawlers, a must in every coastal town! And with its own leisure centre and many local clubs and societies there's plenty you can do to get involved in the community. The town has two golf courses one of which, Seaford Head Golf Course, has vast views of the coastline and the South Downs National Park - plenty of photo opportunities here!Seaford has a couple of pre-schools and primary schools, one being Catholic, one comprehensive secondary school and its own community college. There is a choice of junior schools in neighbouring towns. Seaford is home to an independant school, Newlands Prep and Manor who have a specialist unit for pupils with specific learning difficulties. There is also a special needs boarding school within the town. With its own railway station Seaford is perfectly located for commuters travelling to Brighton, Lewes and Newhaven. Seaford has frequent bus services to Brighton and nearby Eastbourne, both of which have extensive onward services.Seaford is great for those looking to relocate to a small coastal town that stands apart from neighbouring towns like Eastbourne and Brighton, a low-key version almost!
