Watch hockey game in winter time is great. It is cold out, there is snow on the ground and life is generally pretty boring. You should be rejoiced because there is hockey to keep you entertained and there is hot chocolate to keep you warm, of if you prefer, an ice-cold beer.

Hockey is a fast-paced sport played on ice with skates. The speed of the game is what makes it so entertaining. Due to recent technological advancements in equipment and ice surfaces, players are skating faster than ever before and they are bigger and stronger too.

Another aspect of the game that makes for great entertainment is the rhythm of play. The rules of this game don't allow for too many stoppages in play. The only times the play will stop is when a player goes offside, there is an icing or a penalty is called or a goal is scored. Compared to baseball, and football, the play goes on for way longer.

Traditionally, games are played for three periods of twenty minutes each. These periods are stop time. That means the time is stopped when there is play stoppage and it runs when the play goes on. Penalties usually last two minutes, five minutes for major ones. There's no denying the fun in watching a good game of hard-hitting hockey.

There are many reasons for a penalty. A player may be penalized for a variety of infractions including hooking with a stick, interference, slashing, boarding or fighting. Fighting is a major penalty and both players will go to the box, with the instigator usually getting an extra two minutes for starting the altercation. The game usually being played five on five, when there is a penalty, there are only four or even three players on the ice, not counting the goaltender.

The officials are on the ice with the players and skate along with the play. There may be three or four officials, including two linesman and one or two referees. The referees will have a colored stripe on their arm to differentiate them from the linesman. They are the only ones allowed to call a penalty. The linesman are there mostly as line judges, to call offsides or icings and goals.

Watching any sport can be very exciting because you never know what will happen. That is the beauty of live action. Unexpected turn-arounds, giveaways or mistakes change the course of action and seriously influence the outcome. Most sports fans cheer for certain teams and hope their favorite will win but there is always an underdog and they try hard to make it happen.

With indoor arenas and artificial ice that can be produced almost anywhere, hockey can be played year-round in almost any part of the world. However, because of the tradition of this sport and the fact that is has always been played on an ice surface, it remains a winter past-time. This season remains the best time of the year to catch a game.
