Reasons Why Companies Need To Limit Web Access
Since the age of the Internet, many big companies around the world have had struggles controlling their employees' use of the web
. Measures like cutting off total web access or limiting access to business-related sites only like emails were common.
The latest big company to decide to shut down some web access to its employees is Proctor & Gamble. The main reason is not to keep its employees spending their business time on Facebook or replying to their personal emails. The 129,000-employee company wants to stop employees from using the company's internet bandwidth by limiting access to Netflix and music sites like Pandora during work hours.
The move was made known to employees in a memo this week. It is known that Proctor & Gamble, a manufacturer of a wide range of products like Duracell batteries to Pringles, is one of the lenient companies around the world that allows their employees to access the internet almost unrestricted. The management only wants to restrict employees from accessing non-business related sites though.
According to the memo circulated among the employees, an internet report found out that the employees were sucking up the company's bandwidth by watching 50,000 five-minute Youtube videos and listening to around 4,000 hours of music on Pandora in an average day. There was even a point that the company's web capacity became so overtaxed that an immediate interaction was made.
Because the company is selling its products in Youtube, Netflix was banned instead to free up more company bandwidth.
The same issue is also plaguing wireless carriers. The increasing growth in tablet and smartphone markets have also made increased the consumption of data at any given time. The amount of traffic around the world used by mobiles doubles every year and is predicted to continue to do so until at least 2016, according to a comprehensive annual report published by Cisco's Mobile Visual Networking Index.
Proctor & Gamble has noted that personal computer and social networking use has become a serious problem at some company's too, threatening the flow of data if the issue remains unchecked.
While employees are the most efficient scapegoats, companies themselves are partly to blame. Many big companies today are using cloud computing systems which means that a lot of data that are once saved internally are now being uploaded, sometimes several times in a day. Proctor & Gamble recognizes this side of the issue in its memo.
It is no longer a surprising
technology news then if other big companies will follow the lead of P&G in limiting employees access to the internet during work hours. While this is an easy step to make at the expense of employee morale, effective IT leaders within the company are the real solution to the problem. Innovative workarounds and solutions should balance the company's need and those of its employees.
