Reasons and Management of Seeding in Saint Augustine Grass

Reasons and Management of Seeding in Saint Augustine Grass

Saint Augustine grass is a rather unique grass type when it come's to its very unusual seed heads, which often leaves many lawn owners confused as to what the problem is with their lawn when these strange seeds first appear.

This confusion is due to the structure and shape of the seed heads of St. Augustine grass, which are usually hard spikes which stick directly up out of the lawn, and have a pointy tip. These seed heads are often confused with weeds by the new St. Augustine lawn owner.

At this point it may be necessary to say that there is absolutely nothing to worry about with the seed heads of St. Augustine grass. While they may be rigid, they most certainly cannot cause any damage to either people or pets. These seed heads simply make the lawn a little less comfortable to walk on bare-foot for a few weeks of the year.

The seeding in these lawn types will usually occur once or even twice per year, with the seeding lasting between 2-3 weeks. For lawns under heavy stress, such as lack of nutrients from poor fertilizing practices, or lawns lacking in adequate watering, the severity and frequency of seeding can often worsen.

While natural seeding can never be stopped entirely, its severity can be reduced when the seeding is first discovered. this is done by ensuring adequate water to the lawn, as well as applying a quality lawn fertilizer at manufacturers recommendations.

Another question which is often asked about St. Augustine lawns going to seed, is "can the seeds be used to start A new lawn?", and the answer is No, they cannot. The seeds of St. Augustine are sterile for most of the different varieties available, and even the varieties which are not sterile are very poor in reproducing themselves from seed. This is why all new St. Augustine lawns are created by using lawn runners.

Finally, it's important to say that St. Augustine is an excellent grass type for anyone living in a warm climate, and a little matter of seeding should have absolutely no bearing whatsoever for anyone considering the wonderful St. Augustine as their home lawn.
