Recalibrating Your Hygrometer For Ideal Humidor Conditions
You love your cigars, and it may seems like they are the most important part of your cigar hobby
, but in fact, they are secondary to the equipment you use to maintain and protect them. You can shop and collect the best cigars made with the finest tobacco, but without the right humidor and the proper hygrometer, you'll have to smoke them quickly, because there would be no way to keep them!
Hygrometers can be tricky, though, and if yours isn't properly calibrated, it isn't just an annoyance. Because your hydrometer is the tool that helps you keep your box at a perfect humidity level, not too wet, not too dry, An improperly calibrated hygrometer is dangerous to the health of your cigars. You should make sure that yours is properly calibrated at least once a year. If there are problems, you will have to troubleshoot to make adjustments. The type of hygrometer will make a difference here. You may have an analog hygrometer or a digital hygrometer, and the process is different for each. Make sure you are familiar with the controls on your particular piece of equipment.
To recalibrate your digital hygrometer, you will need a few simple items. Collect salt, distilled water, a small plastic container, and a plastic bag. Add a few drops of the distilled water to the salt. Your goal should be to create a very thick, almost paste like substance. Put that mixture in the small plastic container. Then seal the open container and the hygrometer inside the plastic bag. Let the baggie sit for two full days. At the end of this time, your hygrometer should read 75 percent. If it doesn't, the calibration is off, and needs to be adjusted so that it does. This should fix any calibration issues with your digital hygrometer.
With an analog hygrometer, you can follow this same procedure. You also have the option of wrapping the analog hygrometer in a wet piece of paper toweling for one hour. At the end of the hour, the analog hygrometer should read 100 percent. If it does not, adjust it to read 100 percent.
Taking steps to properly calibrate your hygrometer is vital to the health of your cigars and the proper maintenance of the environment inside of all humidors. If you cannot recalibrate it manually, it is very important that you remember the difference between the correct reading (either 75 percent or 100 percent) and the actual reading, so you know what the correct reading is for your unit.
