Rechargeable Electronic Plane For Providing Cheap Air Tickets
There have been efforts to develop airplanes using new technologies and alternative
fuels so that the dependence on the conventional fossil-fuels (the kerosene based ATF) is reduced considerably or eliminated altogether. There have been efforts to use synthetic-fossil fuel mixes, solar energy and even electricity to power the airplanes of future. There have been issues of technology and commercial viability of these fuels which is severely limiting their use in current scenarios. But, limitations notwithstanding, these are welcome steps which hold promise for the future and have the potential to provide cheap air tickets for a long time to come.
There have been two major path-breaking achievements on this front in the recent past. One was the transatlantic flight of a solar-cells powered plane which proved that the solar energy did have the potential to fly the planes and the other was the development of an electronic plane which can be powered by the laser beams. An electric plane is run on electronic motors and this electricity is produced by fuel cells and batteries. The main limitation of these aircraft is that since the stored energy in batteries or fuel cells get consumed up, the operation of cheap flights is feasible only for short-hauls or small distances. This limitation has been sought to be done away with the development of a system to recharge these electric airplanes while these are in-flight or in-air.
Even the present airplanes are also refueled mid-air so as to give them a long range. But, the question of how to recharge an electric plane which makes use of only the stored energy (say, batteries) has long been baffling researchers. Now this limitation has been removed by using the laser beams to charge these fuel cells. The tests done for charging the electric plane with lasers have delivered better results than expected. This has raised the hopes of using the technology to recharge the future planes with laser beams for small private planes.
The project was undertaken with the motive of making an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for military purposes since recharging these from remote locations using laser beam could help in increasing its range and make it operational in territories deeper insider the action zone. The success of this test has definitely proved that the technology development has been done for this specific use and raised the hopes of its commercial use, making electric plane a more viable alternative for future. If and when it becomes commercially feasible, your cheap flights will be possible with utterly cheap air tickets.
