Reclaimed Rubber- An Art, Livelihood And An Entire Industry
Knowing which materials are non-recyclable is the first step towards self-awareness
. This basic knowledge can help us recognize the material and we can make an informed decision accordingly. Rubber is one of those toxic materials that must be reused, recycled and reclaimed, and we have reached a stage where we cannot afford to waste it or throw it away and add to the toxic waste. Rubber waste like used tires, inner tubes of automobiles, etc., can simply be reused as raw materials or secondary products which would be more durable, would cost half and would have the benefits of being eco-friendly. It is especially useful in industrial products like rubber sheets, soles, tires, inner tubes, flaps, etc.
There are various types of reclaimed rubber like Superfine Grade which is used in tread rubber, truck tires, and products that are rubber-molded. There is Medium Grade that is used a lot in rubber mats, auto tires and goods that are rubber-molded. There is Coarse Grade that is used in rubber sheet, belting, tire flaps, coir or floor mat. Reclaimed rubber has fast processing, consumes much less power, has a minimum reversion quality and reduces compound cost.
When the virgin rubber is reclaimed in reclaim rubber machinery, the stages followed are:
Selecting raw materials very carefully.
Removing the ferrous and non-ferrous contaminants
Clean, cut and ground material to a fine powder.
Depolymerising this powder under controlled lab conditions of steam pressure and temperature. This process makes use of rotary autoclaves which are assisted by the appropriate oils.
Strain this powder and refine it to leaves that are smooth as silk and then these are formed into sheets.
This final reclaimed product is thoroughly tested before it is approved for distribution.
The machines used to reclaim rubber are rubber cracker mill, rubber refiner, grinding mill and rotary autoclaves, with the latter being the most popular. Some of these machines work in the following manner:
Rubber refiner: These are used to refine the reclaimed rubber with two chilled, cast iron and wear-resistant rollers.
Rubber Cracker Mill: These are used to crack crude rubber, worn and used tire scrap, fine breaking of rubber black and other waste. It contributes to the plasticating and the mixing of materials made of rubber. The two rollers in the cracker mill rotate reversely each with a different speed. This makes the processing of reclaim rubber a lot more efficient.
Tyre Recycle Machine: The largest source of reclaimed rubber deserves it own machine. It works with some other machines for the production of an accurate reclaimed rubber along with other recycled things.
Tire Shredder Machine: It is used to break up radial or bias whole tires.
Reclaiming rubber is now, a profession and a source of livelihood for many. What started as a pang of awareness, touched inspiration and innovation, has now grown into an industry. You must be friendly to your own pocket and the environment you live in, and choose the path of reclaiming and recycling rubber.
