Recognize Opportunity When It Knocks

I have missed so many opportunities in life because I didnt recognize them when they appeared

. One thing that I have learned is that we can inhibit our own progress by not recognizing opportunity when it knocks. I know this and I sometimes still miss opportunities when they present themselves to me. I think that the biggest reason for this is because I may have developed a preconceived notion of what I think that the opportunity should look like. Many times I will look back after the time to move has passed and realize that I missed an opportunity. Most times I missed it because it wasnt packaged the way that I thought that it would be when it presented itself.

One thing that we human beings do a lot of the time is that we tend to have tunnel vision. We also get comfortable and complacent in our present situation. We may complain but by and large we won't do anything to change the status quo. When life throws a curveball at us we tend to be unprepared. We should constantly search and seek for other opportunities to present themselves to us. We need to stay hungry and remain an active seeker of opportunity. Even if things are going well we need to maintain our focus on searching for the better opportunity.

Learn how to be a chess player in life. Think two or three moves ahead at all times. When things are going well is just the time to prepare for your next move. The task at hand needs to be accomplished, but so does future planning. I know that I have gotten caught up in day to day routine many times and it has cost me because I didnt have my eyes open for the opportunity. Yet it remains a battle to continue to think outside of the box. My mind wants to remain in the comfort zone. We have to have the discipline to push ourselves past what is easy in life. It hurts to push but thats what it takes to be a winner. Extra effort is really the ingredient that separates the winners from the losers. A winner is always prepared to act immediately. A loser may see the negative or the downside to making an immediate move but many times a winner will appear to ignore the disadvantages of taking immediate action.

One trick that I use when driving is to always think about the next possible danger situation. What if, is the question that I constantly ask myself. When I do this I am always ready for the next emergency. I have always mapped out my response before the situation happens. If by chance I do run into a problem I dont have to take a precious second to think about what I need to do. The plan is made.

Now I attempt to apply this same logic towards looking for possibilities in life. I am not as good at it as I need to be, but I am getting better. Never stop planning. Always keep the future in mind. Look for possibilities in unlikely areas. For example, King Solomon who was the wisest man ever, wrote about the ants and how they prepared for hard times. Sometimes our answers come from the most unexpected places. My own personal definition of a wise man is a man who will learn from every situation and circumstance. A wise man will learn from a child because he realizes that he doesnt know everything. A wise person will also take lessons from a bad situation even if he or she just learns the mistake that they dont need to make the next time.

Sometimes we must step out of our current situation and way of sometimes we get so caught up in taking care of the business at hand that we forget about future business. Yes we need to keep our nose to the grindstone, but that grindstone needs to consider future possibilities. You cant see ahead if you are always looking down.

Too much loyalty is not always good. We become loyal to the thing that we are doing sometimes and forget about what is possible for us to accomplish. I remember once when I was loyal to my auto insurance company. I had been their customer for years and had never looked at another for coverage. One day I just accidentally found some information and saw that I could get a much better rate from another company. When they wouldnt lower my rate I dropped them like a hot potato. That experience taught me to not get sucked in to terminal tunnel vision. There is not much that I can do about the opportunity that I have already missed but I dont intend to miss out on another opportunity ever in life if I can help it. Riceland Enterprises
