Recognizing The Symbolic Nature Of The Flag
Symbols are things that represent something many people can identify with
. Certain symbols may bring hope, inspire love and warmth or in some circumstances encourage hatred. There are many symbols in our lives that we use on a daily basis. For example, as we drive, we see many street signs that use symbols as a way to tell us what to expect along the road and warn us to use caution as we approach turns for example.
One perfect example of a symbol I think everyone can identify with is our government flag. What comes to mind when you see the flag? It may be a sense of pride to be an American. It may be the fact that so many men and women have given their lives fighting for our freedoms over centuries. There are many different things that come to mind when I look at a flag and it is different for each of us. I can't help, but think about our wonderful country and the men and women who worked so hard to make it the country that it is today when I look at our flag.
Our country even has a flag day. June 14 is the day that was created as a National Flag Day in recognition of our flag. We are encouraged to fly our government flag on days of significance like our holidays including Memorial Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Veterans Day just to name a few. Did you know that it is recommended to fly your flag at half staff on Memorial Day until 12 noon and then raise it to the top? This is something new I learned when researching more about our flag. If you own your own flag, you are welcome to use it on any day you choose and are cautioned to use great care in how you treat and maintain the flag.
There are flags for each state in our country and there are different flags for every country around the world. There is something special for every person who sees a flag and has a connection with that flag. It holds a special place in their heart. To me, the red white and blue will always hold a dear place in my heart and I will proudly wave my flag on national holidays to support our country if even in a small way.
