Recovering From Breast Reduction, Augmentation And Reconstruction
Breast operations are common in the world of cosmetic surgery
. Some women require a reduction while others want an enlargement, and in some cases, breast reconstruction is necessary. While the operations vary, and you want to ensure you select a cosmetic surgeon who has experience performing all three types of procedures, the healing process - or post-operative care requirements - are quite similar.
After your operation, your surgeon will likely place gauze pads or sterile, adhesive strips over the incision wounds. Be diligent about keeping these clean and dry during the healing process. After the initial 24 hours - during which time the dressings should remain in place and the support bra not taken off - you will be required to gently clean the incision wounds with a hydrogen peroxide mixture, treat them with an antibiotic ointment and carefully redress them. Be careful when doing this, as you do not want the closed incision site to reopen or separate.
In most cases, there will be some slight fluid drainage or bleeding. With breast restoration, it is possible that drains will have been sutured into place, allowing the body to naturally release liquid that could otherwise lead to infection. This is no cause for alarm. Simply be sure to keep clean, dry gauze over the drains until they are removed. If they come out on their own before your cosmetic surgeon is ready for them to, be sure to call and schedule and appointment as soon as possible.
During the first day of recovery, do nothing. Refrain from any strenuous activity that requires you to stress your muscles. After two to four days, generally begin integrating activity back into your life, slowly at first. Day by day, increase the levels. Most people can return to their jobs - desk-type work - after about a week. If you have a labor intensive job, it may take a bit longer. But if you find yourself in pain at all, stop. Any activity causing excess discomfort during healing should be immediately discontinued.
Showering is permitted during the early stages of recovery, but it should be done slowly and carefully. Try to keep gauze or sterilized bandages dry, and do not submerge yourself in a bathtub.
Medication will be given to help control the pain and speed up the healing process. Most cosmetic surgeons will provide you with the prescriptions you need before the operation. Go ahead and have them filed prior to your surgery. Set up an area in your home where you will rest, hydrate and heal. Have clean gauge, your medications, tissues, liquids and other items you may need close at hand. This will be a great comfort after returning home from surgery.
Do not panic if your breasts are not completely symmetrical, rounded or the size you desired immediately after surgery. Swelling is very common and reduces over time. If after some period, you are still unsatisfied, make a few notes that you can go over with your surgeon in your post-operative visit. Follow-up visits are required. After the initial period of healing, you will need to schedule a follow-up appointment. This is usually done after three to five days following your release.
Complications with cosmetic breast surgeries are uncommon, but they can include excessive drainage, fever, chills, unsymmetrical swelling or tightness, as well as severe pain that does not improve daily. If you experience these, or any other conditions you believe may be abnormal, do not hesitate to call your cosmetic surgeon.
