Recovery Of Lost Files

Losing files on your computer is frustrating

Losing files on your computer is frustrating. Of course, one of the obvious places to look is in the trash bin. Sometimes files are accidentally deleted, especially if you"ve been working under stress or are tired from a long day at the office. It would be great if all of your files could be found that way. However, checking the bin doesn"t always work. The next step would be to perform a search on your drive to see if you have accidentally moved the files to another location.

Another option for recovery is to use data recovery software to scan your drive. This software will search the drive to find files that have been permanently deleted. This is possible because deleted files are not really gone until they are overwritten. They are just disassociated with the file system; however, they are still resident on the hard drive. Please understand that if you install recovery software after you have lost the files you stand a chance of overwriting them.

Some software will come with a bootable emergency disk that will run the computer separately from the installed OS. Insert the disk and reboot the machine. You should follow any prompts on boot so that the machine runs from the boot disk. Once it is up and running, the software will perform a scan. A list of files that can be retrieved will be produced. These file should always be recovered to a separate storage device.

However, what can you do if your hard drive will not boot on your Mac? Sometimes the emergency boot disk will work in this scenario. It is important that you always recover your files before attempting to repair the drive or operating system. Repairing the problem first will undoubtedly result in overwriting the lost files.

The best way to recover your files is to use a bootable clone disk of your drive. Programs are available that will created these clones, backing up your operating system and files. Regular backups keep your files up-to-date on the clone drive. Unfortunately, many people do not make clone disks and don"t have an effective backup routine in place. If this is your case, you still may be able to retrieve the files on a drive that will not boot. However, the process is more complicated and will require extra time and effort. If you are using the Lion OS, you won"t have an installation disk; therefore, an Internet connection is required to reinstall the operating system.

Even so, startup disks can be created that allow the computer to boot up without accessing the system on the main drive. A secondary hard drive, external drive or USB flash drive will be needed to perform hard drive recovery in this case. The recovery OS is installed to the secondary media to run the computer and allow for file recovery.
