Recreate Beautiful Sash Windows

For a while; most famously in the Victorian and Georgian periods; sash windows were all the rage

. There are beautiful late nineteenth century properties up and down the country which are perfectly complemented by sash windows; but ever since the style has gone almost completely out of fashion.

Thanks to the advent of UPVC composite technology, sash windows are coming back in, and there is no reason why this should not be the case. Made with weatherproof and durable UPVC plastic, newly fashionable sashes are not only beautiful, but practical and cost effective too, which is why they can once more be seen in many properties throughout the United Kingdom.

A sash window is one that open up instead of out, thanks to one or more moveable panels that form a frame, holding panes of glass. Traditionally, these panes are separated from each other by narrow muntins; thin pieces of metal in a criss cross pattern. Though technically any window with this style of glazing is known as such, for the most part we only refer to ones that open vertically as sashes.

Traditional problems that often occur for those who have this style of window include, but are not limited to, rot, slipping, swelling or distortion, due to the typically wooden construction. However, UPVC composite plastics do not have this problem.

The aim of the composite style is obviously to replicate the design, but reduce the downfalls. Thick plastic means that not only are the windows much better insulated (thanks in no small part to the advancements in glass that we have witnessed in recent years, including double and triple glazing), but also much less prone to twisting or distortion; swelling is a problem that has been all but eliminated. Plastic does not rot or decompose; chances are, the stunning Victorian properties you see with sash windows have either had them replaced at some point, or will need them replacing in the not too distant future.

There are is also much improved security to consider; composite plastics are much more difficult to break through than wooden frames; especially once the wood has been exposed to the elements and general wear and tear for just a few short years. Even newer double or triple glazing only affords limited protection in a wooden frame; it is much more effective to ensure all new windows in your home are made of UPVC composites, and sashes are just one of the many styles you could consider.
