The medical assistant is a highly trained member of the medical office team as a whole.
Medical assistant jobs open and close daily. Doctors seek and hire them to handle important areas and responsibilities, since without them the medical practice couldn't run. They are responsible for such things as greeting and checking in patients that arrive for appointments and sick-calls, taking their vital signs, administering medications, giving injections, change bandages, remove stitches, set up sterile trays, swabbing wounds and throats, preserving blood and urine samples, and drawing blood form patients of all ages. While the medical assistant profession remains largely unregulated and licensing or certification requirements do not exist here in the USA, there are certain laws, morals and ethics to adhere to. For example, while specific laws can vary from state to state, universal regulations mandate that medical assistants can provide direct patient care only under the direct supervision of a licensed health care practitioner only, most often a medical doctor, and only those procedures that they have been properly and sufficiently trained to do. Their main objective is to work efficiently and intelligently hand-in-hand with the doctor and other medical office staff members to keep patients safe and the daily operations of the medical practice going.
Medical assistants greet patients that arrive for their appointments and check them in, verify their demographics and health insurance coverage, pull and file medical charts, maintain patient records, take vital signs, enter the reason for the visit, list allergies and current medications in the patient's medical record and assist during medical exams. When the doctor calls they are available to take their requests, run errands, relay messages and call in prescription ordersand medication refillsto the pharmacy. Throughout the day they attend to patient's needs from the moment they check in to the minute they leave. Often this also involves checking their account balances, accepting co-payments, scheduling new appointments and making referrals to specialists. Their days are busy, but oncethe last patient has been seen and the lights go out, they know that they have made a big difference to many people with special needs and concerns and that the doctor appreciates their help.
