Recycle Poly Bags, Today!
Plastic bags, or more commonly referred to as
, poly bags are everywhere. They have really become a natural part of our every day lives. Newspaper bags, self seal bags, bread bags, poly is really used for everything. In order to be as environmentally friendly and harmonious with items and products that exist and are used, we can recycle our plastic bags. Plastic grocery bags come in two types: Type 2 (high-dentisy polyethylene film) and Type 4 (low density or linear-low density polyethylene) and can be recycled at your local supermarket or other locations. Once the bags are recycled, they are then made into lumber, trashcan liners or plastic bags, how Green of them!
In addition to simply reusing a plastic bag that we have gotten from the grocery store or any other store, we can follow these helpful tips to recycle something we use every day:
- Find out if your local street recycling program (or local recycling center) will accept plastic grocery bags.
- Drop off plastic grocery bags that are Type 2 and Type 4 at your grocery store to be recycled if your local street recycling program cannot accept plastic bags. Most grocery stores will accept bags and typically have bins inside the store.
- Exclude any poly bags that are dark colored or bags that have handles or drawstrings. Plastic food wrap, like Saran Wrap) are non-recyclable.
- Remove debris, clean and dry your plastic bags thoroughly. Take out all foreign objects--this includes receipts, rubber bands, crumbs, whatever you put in your plastic bags. If you don't, the recycling process will be contaminated.
- Check with your county department of public works to find out more about your recycling programs in your neighborhood.
- If you're a bit lazier and can't devote much time to visiting the grocery store and do not have a local street recycling program, devote a large amount of space in your kitchen (or maybe another place in your home) to house plastic bags. Devote one time every 6 or so months to bring plastic bags to the grocery store. This will make things easier for yourself. This might only work if you the space.
- Start your own plastic bag recycling bin on your block or residential building or even your office! If you have the means to transport plastic bags to places where plastic bags are recycled, take initiative and do it yourself. Some people have good intentions but are too lazy to do it themselves, stand up for the planet!
- Make art with plastic bags! Many people have started making plastic bag jewelry, sculptures, hand bags, even crocheted sweaters. Some of these things might sound a bit wacky, but they're worth a shot!
