Diamond jewellery has been precious to humankind for a long time and is a valuable commodity to possess.

A group of individuals who tried to take advantage of this fact by engaging in illegal acts were recently sentenced to jail terms.

Led by university dropout Aman Kassaye, the team of thieves targeted a store selling a range of jewellery pieces in Mayfair, London last August.

The gang made it off with goods totalling 40 million.

Mr Kassaye, who is 25 years old, used a professional makeup artist to disguise his appearance before committing the act because he was aware of the presence of the closed-circuit TV at the location and the fact the shop was in a busy area.

The raid lasted a total of just two minutes and the group made off with 43 pieces of jewellery, which have never been recovered.

However, the items all have a special laser code, making them almost impossible to resell.

A member of the team responsible for the prosecution said: "They are probably buried in a field somewhere. You never know, one day a farmer may come across them along with some of the money taken in the Securitas robbery," the Daily Telegraph reports.

One of the thieves made off on foot through the streets of the capital wearing a crash helmet and police are still trying to trace him.

The rest of the group were caught after the authorities found a mobile phone containing crucial numbers that had slipped down the side of the driver's seat in one of the getaway vehicles.

Mr Kassaye has been jailed for 16 years for his conspiracy to rob and a further five years for possessing a firearm. Another two years has been added for kidnap.

Because of the high value of the goods they sell, shops that stock items like diamond jewellery rely on heavy security to prevent crimes such as this.
