Recycling Rainwater Is A Great Idea For Allotment Owners Far From A Mains Supply

Owning an allotment for growing fruit and vegetables is still very popular in the UK

. It also makes a lot of sense to produce your own food, as these commodities are fast becoming more expensive in the supermarket. It also provides a sense of satisfaction to know you are eating something you have grown with your own two hands. Crops grown in your own allotment generally have a better taste and are of a better quality than those grown in large quantities for supermarkets.

Of course, everything that grows needs sunlight, and also water. These are fundamental requirements. However, in recent years re-using rainwater has become more important for allotment owners simply because local councils have put restrictions on water usage due to rising demand, and due to drought conditions during the summer months. This is where rainwater harvesting comes in to the picture and can prove to be very useful indeed.

If you own allotments that are far outside the range of a mains water supply, you are expected to supply your own water or rely on natural falling rainwater to grow your produce. This can mean collecting rainwater in water-butts, or even having to fetch water from a nearby source such as a stream or river. However if you have a rainwater harvesting system in place, you can use an underground storage tank for water storage. This will mean that you can have an ample supply of fresh water throughout the year, even if restrictions are in place. You can also combine your rain harvesting efforts with other neighbouring allotments to create a communal water source, and so maximising water collecting efficiency.

Re-using rainwater is quickly becoming a necessity for gardeners, and it can be particularly effective if a group of gardeners at an allotment invest in a rainwater harvesting system together. This way they can maximise harvesting and keep underwater storage tanks full.

SCP Environmental Ltd installs water storage tanks built in Germany called Graf Carat tanks. These efficient and heavy-duty tanks can supply the needs of gardeners and allotment owners, and give them the ability to take control of their water supplies. This means better produce, and more savings in the long run. It can also mean gardeners can have a reliable source of water near to their allotments without having to transport water themselves. Simple submersible water pumps inside the tanks themselves will connect to a tap or hose connection point and water is easily accessed and used throughout the allotment.
