Recycling Rubber To Reduce Pollution And Promote green Environment

Used rubber poses a major threat to environment

, all over the world. Most of the used rubber products end up being thrown away in the landfills. It has been estimated that more than 20 million used rubber tires are disposed of in Australia, every year, and merely 20 percent of these used tires are being recycled. A major portion of it is being thrown in landfills and the remaining part is being dumped illegally. As, rubber takes a long time to degrade in the natural way, disposing used rubber into the landfills is posing major risk of serious environmental pollution. Used rubber items, stockpiled into landfills, also pose significant threat of fire and in case, they catch fire, then they will release harmful emissions, which can cause various health problems. Used rubber can infuse harmful chemicals into the environment, thereby contaminating the air and local water bodies.

Used rubber tires contain heavy metals, such as chromium, cadmium, led, zinc, copper, selenium, sulfur, and other toxic poly-aromatic hydrocarbons, that can cause serious health problems, from skin infection and eye irritation to major organ failure and even carcinogenesis. Accumulation of used tires can be breeding grounds for parasites, mosquitoes, rats, and other pests, which are carriers of many diseases. Disposing used rubber in the landfill is the least desirable choice.

Recycling used rubber is indeed the right solution for all illegal disposal problems. In this process, used tires are processed into powder or crumb, and then used in the manufacturing of various types of reclaim rubber products. Regrettably, it is very costly to recycle rubber using the new technology. Efforts are being made by numerous companies to introduce a new approach to recycling rubber. It coheres to the innovative approach of producing new items from used rubber, including new tires. The traditional recycling process starts with shredding used rubber, followed by grinding, once the reinforcing fibers have been removed. The powdered rubber is then used in product remanufacturing.

Till recently, used rubber could only be used for limited and less costly applications, such as making asphalt additive for constructing roads. Rubber, in its powdered form, is unsuitable for manufacturing products that require vulcanization, a process in which rubber is turned into more durable materials by mixing sulfur and other chemicals. Through repeated tests and refining, the used rubber goes through a process, which turns it into better quality than it was before. This technology is used to modify the rubber powder to become more like the original, known as virgin rubber. This process is known as de-vulcanization, a process that reverses the chemical reaction used to make tires.

The recent de-vulcanization technology is still under the process of continuous R&D to achieve more consistent quality. The process involves a huge cost, as it is based on thermo-mechanical technology. The process involves de-vulcanization during the extrusion and thus it is least economically practicable and commercially viable.

However, more high quality rubber is produced by this innovative technology, which can be used as a replacement for synthetic and even natural rubber, used in the manufacturing of new tires, conveyor belts, insulation materials and much more. The recycling process uses less power, thereby making it a green technology, with reduced level of carbon emissions, and causing minimal environmental impact.
