So this radiation passes through the atmosphere and fall on the earth's surface. The earth surface gets heated up during the day time and it emits the heat which it has absorbed during the day time as longer wavelength. The longer wavelengths are in the region of IR. Carbon dioxide is opaque towards the IR light (Infra red radiation). So it heats up the atmosphere.

One of the important ways to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions is to use alternate power sources. Use of hydroelectric power and nuclear power stations are one of the important ways to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions. The emissions can be controlled when the coal burning is stopped.
