One natural cause of global warming is the release of methane gas from arctic tundra and wetlands. Methane does occur naturally. Wetlands, termites, and decomposing matter in bodies of water all release methane gas. However, people create methane gas release as well with rice paddies, livestock, landfills, coal mining, and gas production. The bad thing is that methane is also a greenhouse gas, which means that it has the ability to trap heat in the earth's atmosphere. Another cause is the earth's natural cycle of climate change. The tilt of the earth relative to its plane of travel about the sun is what causes seasons. The earth wobbles in space so that its tilt changes between about 22 and 25 degrees on a cycle of about 41,000 years.

As for man-made causes, pollution is probably one of the major ones and one that does the most damage. Pollution is caused by a variety of factors, and burning fossil fuels is one thing. Fossil fuels are fuels made of organic matter such as coal or oil. When fossil fuels are burned, they give off a greenhouse gas called carbon dioxide.

Indirectly, the growing population of the earth can also contribute to climate change. More people means more food and more means of transportation. Because animals are our main sources of food, that would mean more manure and more methane. Also, more cars mean more carbon emissions.
