Reduce Your Utility Bills - Top Ten Tips

In today's economy every penny helps and you can save yourself a considerable amount of money (and help the planet at the same time) by following our energy saving tips. Below are the top ten tips for reducing your utility bills:

Tip #1: Use Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFL) - In most homes lighting accounts for 10% of your electric bill so reductions in lighting use will save you a lot of money in the long run. CFLs bulbs are about 4 times more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs so replacing all of your bulbs with CFLs can save you considerable money. The downside of CFLs is that they contain mercury and thus have special disposal requirements to minimize mercury contamination.

Tip #2: Insure windows and doors are sealed well - Heating and cooling is by far the biggest utility expense so it pays to not lose this energy through poorly sealed windows and doors.

Tip #3: Use whistling kettle for boiling water - Appliances that generate lots of heat (or cold) tend to use the most electricity. Hardly anything in a home gets hotter than a stove so as to be expected stoves are one of the biggest users of energy regardless whether it is electric or gas. So it pays to minimize it's use and one way is to use a kettle that whistles for boiling water so you never let it boil longer than necessary.

Tip #4: Use microwave when possible - Microwaves use less energy than does a stove or oven so their use can help save you money.

Tip #5: Turn off things when not in use - Mom always said to turn off the lights when you leave a room. Well that's good advice. This also applies to televisions and computers.

Tip #6: Turn down heat at night while sleeping - Heating a home during the winter is probably your most expensive utility. Turning down the heat at night when your warm under your covers will have a significant impact on reducing your energy usage.

Tip #7: Air dry clothes when possible - Another 'hot' appliance is the clothes dryer so minimize its use when possible. Air drying even just some of your cloths will help. Polyester tends to air dry the fastest.

Tip #8: Turn water on/off while using - This will take a while to get in the habit of doing, but turning off the water while brushing your teeth or washing a dish will save you gobs of water and money. So instead of just leaving the the water on the entire time you're washing dishes or brushing your teeth it's better to turn it on/off to save water.

Tip #9: Setup computers to sleep/hibernate when not in use - Instead of turning of your computer when not in use, set it up so that it automatically goes to sleep when not in use. Desktop computers use a lot more electricity than do laptop computers so this is especially important for desktop PCs.

Tip #10: Watch TV in the dark - Watching television in the dark is in no way bad for your eyes. Not only does it reduce electricity usage but it also greatly enhances the viewing experience especially for movies.
