In the past few years carbon emissions and the environment has become a widespread topic of discussion. This is because of the well publicised effects of cars on the environment and what the manufacturers of these cars as well as us, the drivers, can do to help.

Armed with the information that carbon emissions are damaging the planet consumers are now becoming more aware of their carbon emissions, and trying to reduce their Carbon Footprint wherever possible. Many cars manufacturers in recent years have put various systems in place to try and reduce carbon emissions from their vehicles. A further example would be the attempted reduction in emissions in Formula 1 racing, a usually lavish and excessive sport. It shows the leaps and bounds moved, in the attitude towards climate change.

This kind of positive attitude towards climate change has been repeated by the consumer when purchasing new cars, as more and more energy efficient cars go on sale. It seems it won't be a long way away until a hybrid car is produced for the mass market. With previous Hybrid and Electric cars not really managing to take off, there is a real opportunity for the first manufacturer who can produce a fully functioning, practical and efficient Hybrid vehicle.

This again has been backed by the UK Government who have placed incentives for drivers of energy efficient cars. They way the UK government have implemented these changes is by putting different road tax brackets in place based on fuel economy and carbon emissions, in this system the higher the vehicles emissions into the atmosphere the higher the bracket they enter and therefore have to pay for their vehicle to drive on the road. This has been further extended in the borough of London with congestion charges doubling for vehicles with high carbon emissions. This move has helped to reduce Carbon emissions in the London area and has made people consider buying a smaller vehicle to help combat the price they have to pay to enter the congestion zone.

All these combined has helped to change the public's opinion on climate change and the need to reduce carbon emissions as a necessary evil. More and more people are changing to smaller cars knowing the effect using a higher emission car has on their bank balance and also the environment.
