Refinishing hardwood flooring

It is possible to refinish many types of hardwood flooring, although care should be taken to ensure that the veneer layer of the flooring is sufficiently thick so that sanding does not wear through the layer. If the floor you want to renovate is made of traditional floor boards, or Parquet blocks this is not a problem. If the boards are rough, or damaged use a colored wood filler that matches the wood color to repair the damage and let it dry properly before sanding, letting it dry properly makes it much less likly to break loose when you use the floor board sander. For this type of job you will need to rent a floor board sander from your local hire store, a floor sander is a large belt sander that is used like a lawn mower and will sand large areas quickly. You start off with a coarse grit sanding belt to remove the top layer, and then resand the whole floor again using a fine grit belt to get a smooth finish. You will also need a small belt sander to reach places the large machine cant get to.When the boards are to your liking, vacuum up the sawdust, and then wipe over the whole area of the floor with an alcohol based solvent, this will help remove any dust you have missed and remove grease as well. If you wipe the floor with water you will raise the grain in the wood and need to do more sanding. You can now either stain the floor if you want to change the color or go directly to protecting the wood with a hard surface sealer like polyurethane. You will probably need to re apply the sealant several times allowing it to dry between each coat, depending on the manufactures instructions to achevieve a strong durable finish.About the Author:
