Refresh Your Pet Crabs With A Hermit Crab Bath
After birth of hermit crabs takes place, they migrate to the beach
, where they spend much of their adult life, although adult pet crabs cannot survive long submerged in water, they do need a bath. Taking the time to give your crab a proper bath should not be overlooked, doing so you can prevent skin irritations and issues with mites, it also keep your hermit crabs happy and healthy, it does not take very long to complete this task and is crucial to the hermit crabs wellbeing.
Many exotic pet owners overlook this step, since the hermit crab bath does sound a little funny to think that your pet crab would need a bath. Still these crabs will need a bath from time to time. Giving a pet crab a bath every few weeks will help in keeping clean his shell and body and prevent mites, a common parasite in hermit crabs. Hermit crabs can be bathed almost any time, although one should not give them a bath if they are molting or preparing to molt. Common reasons to bath a pet crab include the presence of mites or a dirty shell, often due to eating messy foods.
Hermit crabs should be bathed in a small bowl or mug with straight sides but first need a chlorine remover, to add to the water. Tap water is chlorinated, which can harm the hermit crabs health, if at all possible, use purified water rather than regular tap water, tap water can contain other minerals that may be harmful and hermit crab bath water does not need to be hot.
During the bathing process, it is not important to get your crab to come out of his shell. In fact, trying to force him out can hurt him. Many hermit crab owners bath their crabs at night, when they are more active and therefore more likely to come out of their shell. Waiting until night time is not necessary though. The water can still get into the shell to clean it while your crab is inside.
If the crab does come out of his shell, rinse the inside of the shell to wash out any food debris or sand but do not drop the crab into the water or leave it there for too long because, even though they do have gills crabs cannot breathe underwater for long periods of time. Giving a proper bath will give you happy hermit crabs.
