Refurbish Your Mantel

The mantel and surround to your fireplace is what sets it off

. Without it a fireplace is bare, uninteresting and can't be considered the center piece of the room. When you enter a room with a fireplace and surround your eyes tend to get drawn toward it and surprisingly this can happens even if the fire is alight.

It's not often that you need to make changes to your mantel and fire surround. The style generally goes with most things, so even when you redecorate your room, you probably don't need to attend to the mantel area.

However, maybe you have had your fireplace surround for many years and you really would like to have a change. You may have had a look at replacing your wooden mantle and surround with marble, slate or granite, but found the price too prohibitive.

Well, if you have set your ideas on making some changes to your fireplace and don't want to pay out for a marble or similar mantel and surround then why not choose a stone facing kit instead. For a fraction of the price of a full stone fireplace, you can transform your existing wooden one and no one will know, except you; and even you will have a little difficulty, they are so realistic. Of course they are realistic, because the facing kit is made from marble, granite or slate, it's simply that it fixes to the existing surround.

When it's complete it gives the appearance of a solid stone mantel and surround, but not only does it look good, it feels good.

You can get stone fireplace surround kits to fit most types of fireplaces, or if your fireplace is custom built there are many companies that will come around and measure up for you.

The kits come with full instructions so if you are a fairly competent DIY person you will be able to refurbish the fireplace mantel and surround yourself. However, don't worry if you would prefer not to do it; most suppliers will happily do the job for you for an extra fee.

Choosing the type of stone is probably the hardest part. If money is a concern then granite is the least expensive and marble the most expensive. Typically you can expect to pay around $500 for a slate fireplace kit and upward of about $800 for a marble kit. However, prices do vary so look around first. Each type of stone is available in a variety of styles so you won't have any problem choosing one that fits the rest of the decor.

Once it's fitted you won't need to touch it again. It will look every bit as good in 20 years as the days you fitted it and the beauty is they are so easy to keep clean and totally maintenance-free.

So, if you were put off by the prices you had seen for getting a marble mantel and fire surround, now you know that you can get a kit that looks equally as good for a fraction of the price.
