Regardless of the way you got married, as long as you are married, God's blessing is in it

"What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder" (Matthew 19:6)

. Often agonizing fear torments an unhappy married couple and brings the question. "Did God really want us to get married? Perhaps we made a mistake and married without His leading us! If so, is there no hope for us?"

This is probably the most successful tool the devil uses for breaking up marriages. The word "man" means male or female; for either husband or wife to try deliberately to "put asunder" what he or she knows "God hath joined together" requires tremendous audacity! Therefore he or she must try not to reason that God did not do the joining together in the first place. Henry and Anne were having serious problems, and came to an elder in the Church. "We are going through so much heart-ache in our marriage that we wonder if we ought to go our separate ways. We quarrel about nothing, it seems, all the time. We have prayed and tried to read the Bible, but neither does any good. We wonder if we made a mistake to get married. If so, how could we ever learn to be happy together?"

"Why do you think you may have made a mistake to get married?" The Elder asked. "Everything was wrong," Anne replied. "We both rebelled against our parents. We turned away from the church. We thought we were madly in love, when we were still just kids. Neither of us was a Christian; in fact we eloped and married without our parent's consent." "With a story like that, "Henry added, "What hope is there for us? Isn't that a pretty clear case of marriage made without God having anything to do with it? And if He had His back turned when we eloped, isn't such a marriage doomed?". "If our troubles have come from the fact that God did not join us together," Anne broke in, "maybe Satan did it. And if that is so, isn't it our duty to divorce?"

The Elder did not know what to say! As a well respected member of the Church, he had known that both were trying to suppress enormous inner explosions from erupting like a volcano, but he hadn't guessed that this was the problem. He silently prayed that the Lord might give him some wisdom, for he certainly had none. Suddenly he remembered reading something in the Bible. "Turn to Psalm 87," He suggested. "You see how these people were born in various heathen lands such as Babylon, Philistine, or Tyre. Then, in contrast, we see people fortunate enough to have been born in Jerusalem, as God's chosen ones. What a difference between poor ignorant heathen and those who were born free in God's own city!

"Then notice how some of those same unfortunates born in heathen lands turned their faces to the Lord and became converted: 'Zion!'-her name shall be Mother, for every follower of Mine belongs to her birth.' The Eternal writes of every nation, in His census. 'This follower of mine was born in it." (Verses 4-6). "Do you get the point? The Lord alters the sinner's birth certificate when he is converted to Christ, and write that he was born in 'Zion', or Jerusalem." Anne looked at the Elder with a quizzical expression. "What does that have to do with us?"

He went on "You see, even though you did not know the Lord when you rebelled against Him and eloped and got married without prayer or asking His blessing, He still knew you and loved you just the same. And when in later life you were both converted and chose to follow the Lord, He wiped out all that miserable past and 'counts' that you were born in 'Zion' all the time. Even though you did not seek the Lord's blessing when you got married, HE 'counts' that you did because you do so today. He is a generous Father to us, for 'He calls those things which be not as though they were' (Romans 4:17).

"Look, Henry and Anne: Justification by faith is a 'counting' of faith for righteousness, so that we stand before God as though we had never sinned at all. Not even once in our whole lifetime! His justification covers you since your birth, and that means that His guidance covers you, too. You remember how Jacob was intended to get the birthright, even before he was born? He went about getting it in the wrong way, but nonetheless, he got it in the end. You went about things the wrong way, but the Lord led still. No-don't ever think of divorce!"

A great burden was lifted from their hearts. They saw the point. They saw the love of God for them as they had never understood it before. And the Elder was glad to say and testify that after many years, they are still happily married. Where they lived, divorce was such a common "solution" to marriage problems that they were tempted to think this was the only way out of their difficulty. But divorce brings shame and ridicule on the Lord Himself; It is putting asunder what he Himself has joined together, and thus it is a form of "anti-Christ." Do you know that a wild Lion in the bush will flee from you if you Courageously rush toward it as though to attack? The Bible likens Satan, our enemy, to "a roaming lion seeking whom to devour." But we are told to resist the devil, and he will flee from us. (1 Peter 5:8; James 4:7).

If you do not believe that the Lord brought you together, then Satan will have opportunity to suggest all kinds of doubts to you. "Resist" him with firm confidence in the Lord and that He has led you in your Life.
