Relationships Are Built One Day At A Time

I woke up with the thought of how my marriage and everyone's married relationship I see in my private practice and in my private life are built to suceed or fail one day at a time. It is like we need to remember to make a deposit into the relationship's bank account to build up a full relationship over time.

As a newly married couple there are the many experinces together; the growing in commitment to our spouse first and making the separation from our family, the mutual goals and needs discussed and worked out, the expectations adjusted as needed, the joyful gifts like babies and homes to build and make a life in, and on and on. Besides these bookmarks of a relationship, there need to be daily deposits into the emotional life of a marriage. Some examples are ,"I love you and let me show you', remembering to keep each other informed of your life apart, asking for feedback and ideas, touching and making love frequently, connecting as friends as well as lovers, and supporting and discussing each other's dreams. It can be so easy to be too tired to bother.I say don't miss one deposit. Each day can add up to so much more as it builds on itself.

Last night I came home from a full day of work and then a rewarding meeting in the evening. My husband and I connected for a short time verbally, but we had no touching, just sitting and being together before going to sleep. I was exhausted. When I awoke early before he left for the office, I rubbed his back and we connected for a few minutes before he had to dart off to get dressed.

We didn't miss a day.
