Relief Aid Blunders of Ralph Gonsalves
It's during emergencies that you get to know just how efficient an administration is. Or how effective the leadership qualities of the Prime Minister are in handling such situations! The citizens of St. Vincent and Grenadines have found the answer to both when the hurricane struck home. The people of the country were badly ravaged by the hurricane and there were mass destructions all around. People were looking at their government to bail them out of trouble. While the neighboring country of St. Lucia did exceedingly well in meeting up with the tragedy, SVG fumbled and grappled with reality. The Prime Minister of the country, Ralph Gonsalves, was busy planning the upcoming December 13 elections where he is billed to lose his throne of nine years.
With the international press focusing their attention on SVG, Ralph Gonsalves decided to do something about relief work. Brushing aside rumors and reports that he had called on for relief help well before the hurricane hit SVG, he embarked upon a campaign to rehabilitate the people. Make no mistake about his intentions. It was not borne of the desire to make life easier for people who voted him to the top job on two occasions. His relief work was propelled by his desire to grab the office a third time. He expected people to forget these years of misrule and mayhem. He wanted people to remember what he was doing to put people back in their homes. Even in relief aid, he didn't let go of his petty politics.
Before anyone could raise objections, Ralph Gonsalves publicly declared that he will do his best and at the same time he expected his opposition to find fault with what he was doing! This was his master plan to make people doubt anything that would be said about his relief work. But that doesn't take away from some hard facts that have come to light. Independent media reports have pointed out that the Prime Minister was distributing relief according to party colors. People who are known to be supporters of the Unity Labor Party (ULP) are getting the cream of the support. The leftovers are being handed over to the others. This is the crudest example of partiality that the Prime Minister has always enjoyed nurturing. An undivided and united St. Vincent and Grenadines is not something that Ralph Gonsalves ideally wants.
Whatever the incident may be, a fire in the city or a major accident, the Ralph Gonsalves government is always slow to react. The citizens are aware that when they are faced with the odds, they have nothing more to do than depend upon themselves. They know that relying on the police or on the security personnel of the country will only bring additional harm on themselves. They want a government that will be there for them always. That is why the December 13 elections are expected to be the end of the road for Ralph Gonsalves. And because Ralph knows that, he will stop at nothing!
